10 Common Grooming Questions Answered

There’s a huge amount of grooming questions on the internet, many of which have been around for longer than we can remember. We’ve looked at some of the most common myths, and the questions men ask relating to them, and gave you the verdict once and for all.

Does chocolate cause spots?

The answer is no – Chocolate doesn’t cause spots. Any blemishes on the skin are due to either genetics, hormones, stress, and even a mixture of all 3. You’ll even find cocoa is a popular ingredient in skincare! Granted, it’s not edible, but it does the job and smells great.

Will shaving make my hair grow back quicker?

Not at all. Facial hair is actually hereditary, so if your Dad didn’t have a thick beard, chances are you won’t either. No matter how much you try to shave it. It might grow back feeling coarse, but this is just due to cutting the soft end off each strand of hair.

Should I brush my teeth after every meal?

Not necessarily. It’s actually advised that you wait over 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth. It’s also a bit difficult to brush every time you eat, so it’s worth considering mouth wash or chewing gum.

Are men’s and women’s products the same?

No, they’re not. This is due to the fact that male skin is actually 20% thicker than female skin. It’s also typically more oily, and ages different, which means it can benefit from different products.

Should I use more shaving cream for a better shave?

No. The key to a great shave is a great razor. Adding more shaving cream will make it difficult for your razor to get to the hair, and you’ll end up running through your product quicker. Use just enough product to cover your hair – the main aim is to soften it to make shaving easier.

Will washing my face more help prevent acne?

Unfortunately, it won’t. This can actually have the opposite effect. Over-washing your skin can actually make your skin product more oil to make it balance back out. More oil production will lead to a higher risk of blocked pores, which in turn will cause more blemishes. Wash your face a maximum of twice a day and you’ll be good to go.

Should I moisturise if I have oily skin?

You should! Moisture and oil are different things, and if your skin doesn’t get enough moisture, it will actually product more oil. People with oily skin shouldn’t just use any moisturiser though, look for one that is oil-free.

Can I use regular soap on my face?

No. Any soap that isn’t made for your face will cause irritation and dryness. Its aim is to strip oil from the skin, which can wreak havoc on your face. Get yourself a wash especially for your face.

Do I need to use sunscreen on a cloudy day?

Yes, definitely! The sun emits two different types of UV rays, UVA and UVB. Whilst UVB causes burning, UVA is the main cause of premature ageing. It’s also important to note that due to UVA rays frequency, it can travel through clouds and even windows. To keep your skin younger for longer, wear sunscreen every day.

If my product doesn’t work quickly, should I try something new?

No, stick it out! Your skin cells will usually regenerate around once a month. With that in mind, any product you use can actually take up to 4 weeks before you see any visible results. We know there’s some that have instant effects, but this will most likely be a temporary solution until the actual benefits start showing.
