How to Go to Sleep Earlier

With so many big days approaching, there is a mountain of things to do. Working wears you out so it’s really important to get some shut eye a lot earlier than usual. Of course, if you’re anything like us then sleep is usually avoided until later than ideal, but thankfully we know how to catch extra z’s when needed. Check out our top tips to go to sleep earlier below.

Avoid Caffeine

When it gets to mid-afternoon and you can feel your energy levels dropping, avoid reaching for that wake up cup of coffee. Stimulants will keep you awake longer at night if you drink them past 1pm, so feel free to have your morning coffee, but refrain from that cup of goodness later on. If you desperately need that energy boost, opt for a banana or some pasta for slow release energy instead. This way you can avoid the dreaded crash, leaving you feeling better overall.

Set an Electronic Curfew

Switching off all electronics at least an hour before bed, such as your TV, games, phone, laptop and tablet is really important. These devices emit a blue light from behind the screen, tricking your brain cells into thinking it’s daytime. Due to this, your brain thinks you should be awake and won’t wind down, therefore affecting your sleep. If you must do something before bed, read a book or draw a little to relax instead.

Stay Cool

Temperature is a huge factor when it comes to sleep quality. When you’re too warm, you become agitated and fidgety. When you’re too cold, you’re too busy focusing on trying to warm up rather than getting to sleep. If you know that wearing thick, fleece pyjamas often leave you waking in the night soaked in sweat, avoid them and wear some cotton ones. If you’re usually cold, invest in some bed socks to keep your body temperature up, helping you to drift off.

Distract Your Mind

Concentrating on trying to get to sleep or thinking about daily life will leave you unsuccessful and frustrated. Using a white noise generator will keep your mind from wandering and overthinking so you can get some shut eye as soon as your head hits the pillow. You can also try applying a face mask to help yourself to relax.

Exercise Earlier

Having too much energy when you need to go to sleep is a recipe for disaster. To prevent this from happening, you need to make sure you burn off any extra energy during the day. Spending at least half an hour exercising will help sleep come with ease later on. Just remember to aim to do it earlier in the morning as exercising before bed will wake you up, the opposite of what you need!
