2018 has been a massive year for male grooming, and Mankind has been extremely proud to have brought to you some of the most exciting new developments in skincare, hair and beard care, shaving, and much more. As a way to say thank you for a wonderful year on Mankind, we’ve rounded up our favourite grooming essentials over the last year. Check out the Best in Grooming 2018.
Launching House 99 earlier this year has to be one of our biggest highlights of the last 12 months, and we’ve been huge fans of their Broad Defense Moisturiser SPF20 ever since we got our hands on it. Combining deeply conditioning Spirulina, Quinoa, and Glycerine, with UV filters that deflect the sun’s rays, this moisturiser will be your skin’s new best friend, and that’s why it makes it onto our Best In Grooming roundup for 2018.
Next up on the best in grooming roundup is an absolutely vital ingredient to a top notch skincare routine. If we had to pick one skincare item that we believe makes the most difference to your complexion, it’d be a high quality exfoliating scrub. Throwing it into your routine once or twice a week requires minimal effort, but delivers maximal results. We particularly love the Elemis TFM Energising Skin Scrub as its Phytoplankton granules have both exfoliating and nutritive effects.
Tommy Now Eau de Toilette from Tommy Hilfiger is a truly iconic fragrance that blends top notes of classic Bergamot and Mandarin that gives way to unusual and enigmatic base notes of Amber Wood and Moss. Fresh, spicy, and eminently masculine, we’re certain you’ll love it if you pick it up for yourself.
The Baxter of California Clay Hair Pomade is a hard-wearing, strong hold Clay with a natural finish, and it’s been one of the most impressive grooming products we’ve come across this year by some way. Its distinctive Citrus Lemon Peel, Fennel, and Sage Oil fragrance is a touch that sets it apart from its peers, as does its versatility. Used in small quantities, it enhances your hair’s natural colouring and can simply be used to keep a neat or brushed style in place, while used in greater amounts, it can be the tool to create high impact, high volume styles.
The Clinique for Men Oil-Control Moisturiser is a refreshing moisturiser with a shine free finish. Repairing and nourishing skin without causing uncomfortable greasiness, this is an ideal moisturiser for use in the morning or to take along to work or the gym for a mid-day application with a shine-free finish.
The Aveda Thickening Paste has been one of our favourite grooming products to get acquainted with over the last year. A genuinely unique product, it creates shape, volume, and density, enhancing the hair’s natural colour, while pulling off the trick of appearing completely natural. What makes it really stand out is that, were you to touch your hair after the product has set, you’d have no way of telling that a product has been used, despite an impressive level of thickness and lift being created. For this reason, it can also double up as an effective pre-styler, and it’s a brilliant addition to any grooming routine.
The Babyliss For Men Super Beard Trimmer is a beard trimmer that nails down all the basic elements to produce an impressive package. Its minimal design forgoes complexity to deliver exactly what you need: 15 ultra-precise guard length settings, adjustable by a simple mechanical wheel. Stubble maintenance is a crucial part of the average man’s grooming routine, and a quality beard trimmer such as this is an ideal way to achieve this.
The skin around the eyes is something of a privileged area when it comes to skincare, in that giving the area special treatment delivers extra-impressive results. The eyes are one of the first places that signs of ageing begin to show, and due to the sensitive nature of the skin it needs a delicate designated cream to combat this. The Antipodes Kiwi Seed Oil Eye Cream combines Avocado Oil and antioxidant rich Kiwi Fruit Extract and Vinanza Grape, alongside soothing Aloe Vera, and together, nourish and firm the skin around the eyes without causing irritation.
The Redken Brews 3 in 1 Shampoo and Body Wash is both cleansing and moisturising, leaving the hair strengthened and revitalised, but in addition to this is a fantastic body wash too. A top quality product, it’s as at home as part of your daily routine as it is as a space saver in your gym bag.
The Aesop Parsley Seed Anti Oxidant Serum is the king of anti-ageing serums. Its high potency, antioxidant-rich extracts of Grape and Parsley Seed combat the oxidative stress that is responsible for the damage to the skin that causes signs of ageing to develop. Used between cleansing and moisturising, it will have a huge impact on your complexion and skin health.
The revamped Murdock London range has been one of our favourite launches of the last year. Their Body Wash is a foaming soap that cleanses without stripping moisture from the skin. The brand’s signature Black Tea fragrance, woody, spicy, and masculine, is what truly makes this body wash stand out.
The Regenerate Advanced Foaming Mouthwash is a dental care product that launched this year. We covered the benefits of the Advanced Foaming Mouthwash in much more detail in this blog post, but in summary, it’s an innovatively designed foaming mouth wash that is designed to maximise coverage of the teeth so that its effects work even in hard to reach areas. This mouthwash not only freshens the breath, but works to combat and even reverse enamel damage brought about by acid erosion.
Next in our Best in Grooming annual roundup is an absolutely incredible, all-inclusive kit from Men Rock that serves as the perfect introduction to traditional barbershop shaving. We covered why a traditional shave is so underrated in our article on razor bumps, but to summarise, once you have your technique nailed down to the point that you can avoid nicks and cuts, a traditional shave is a lifesaver for your skin. The Double Edge Razor Starter Pack will give you everything you need to get started, including shaving cream, shaving brush, and safety razor.
The Boss Bottled Eau De Toilette is one of the more recent additions to the Mankind fragrance roster, and it’s a true classic. Its top note of Apple is a refreshing, youthful aroma which gives way to sensual Sandalwood, Cedar, and Vetiver, combining iconic masculine scents into an impressive all-round package.
At Mankind we’re firm believers in the notion that neglecting your teeth is the most surefire ways to sell your grooming routine short, and following this logic, we think it simply makes sense to invest in your oral hygiene regime.
The Philips Sonicare Diamondclean Smart Electric Toothbrush is made with technology at the forefront of dental care. Using Smart Sensor Technology, it feeds data on your brushing to your phone, where it is visualised with clean instruction about how to improve your technique. Using this, you can establish which areas of your teeth are being neglected and shift your focus in order to target them. Consistently applying this approach over several months, you can see truly impressive results.
