Our Guide to Caring for Dry Hair

We recently shared our ultimate guide along with some top tips for caring for fine hair, which you can discover here. This time, we’re looking into everything you need to know about dry hair. Below, you can discover all of our top tips, as well as our premium, effective product recommendations to care for dry hair.

What Is Dry Hair?

Dry hair is often characterised by split ends, dullness and often scalp itching, sometimes leading to dandruff. Caused by either an alteration in the scalp or damage from chemicals and heat, it can make your hair appear extremely unhealthy. Not only that, it can also become difficult to manage and style due to flyaways.

Can Dry Hair Become Oily?

If your dry hair is caused by damage rather than your scalp, it’s possible that your hair can become oily. This is due to the fact that your scalp can end up over-compensating with oil in an attempt to hydrate your hair. This is why it’s important to maintain moisture using the correct products during your haircare regime.

How to Care for Dry Hair:

1. Kérastase Specifique Masque Hydra-Apaisant Conditioner 200ml

£47.00

It may seem obvious, but using conditioner is a vital step in caring for dry hair. You should use a hydrating conditioner with every wash to replenish any lost moisture from cleansing. This conditioner from Kérastase contains L-carnosine, vitamin E and Moringa oil extracts. These are used to calm the scalp whilst absorbing deep into the hair follicle for smooth, soft hair.

2. Shu Uemura Art of Hair Urban Moisture Masque 200ml

On top of using conditioner with every wash, you should use a hydrating masque once a week on dry hair. We recommend the Shu Uemura Art of Hair Urban Moisture Masque. This is because it treats dry, damaged hair by replenishing moisture and improving manageability. Using Moringa and red algae extracts, it’s particularly effective on sensitised hair that's been exposed to environmental aggressors.

3. Sachajuan Leave In Conditioner 250ml

£27.00

As moisture tends to escape dry hair more quickly than usual, extra hydration should be added to compensate. A leave-in conditioner such as this one from Sachajuan can be simply spritzed through the hair to promote body and shine whilst adding weightless hydration. It also strengthens individual strands to improve manageability.

4. American Crew Daily Moisturising Shampoo (450ml)

With dry hair, you must be strategic when it comes to choosing shampoos. Aim to avoid using clarifying, stripping shampoos and opt for gentler versions. A nourishing shampoo such as the American Crew Daily Moisturising Shampoo is a good choice as it effectively cleanses the hair and scalp whilst still adding moisture and shine.

5. Moroccanoil Treatment Original 25ml

One of the common causes of dry hair is damage, which prevents the hair from maintaining an adequate amount of moisture. A repairing treatment can dramatically improve the hair by reversing the damaging effects of heat styling, external aggressors and a poor diet. We recommend applying Moroccanoil Treatment after each wash, as well as whenever your hair feels it needs replenishment.
