AHAs: What They Can Do For You

AHAs are derived from natural foodstuffs, mostly fruits, which is why they’re often referred to as ‘fruit acids’. When used in a low percentage these acids help to break down the inter-cellular ‘glue’ that bonds cells to the skin’s surface. As these cells are already dead and ready to be shed, the process of releasing them allows younger, fresher cells to appear. Removing these unnecessary cells stimulates the skin’s natural cell regeneration process making it look brighter, younger and more vital.

The AHAs most commonly used in skin care products are Citric Acid from citrus fruits, Mallic Acid from apples, Tartaric Acid from grapes, Lactic Acid from milk and Glycolic Acid from sugar cane. The use of Glycolic Acid is very common in the United States where it’s used by dermatologists in higher doses to reduce skin discolouration and scarring. Used in very low percentages in cleansers, moisturisers and serums, mild AHAs can greatly improve dull, discoloured or ageing skin and a great alternative to traditional facial scrubs. Try Anthony Glycolic Facial Cleanser.
