Spirulina is a form of algae that grows naturally in tropical and subtropical lakes and is recognised as a whole food source with powerful nutritional properties. It is believed Spirulina was widely used by North Africans and Mexicans many years ago; however it is only in the last 40 years that its popularity has grown as a food supplement.
Spirulina is a rich source of proteins, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. This variety of nutrients makes Spirulina a powerful immune boosting food that can help the body fight viruses and infections as well as conditions such as cancer. Within this super food you will find high volumes of B vitamins, iron, essential trace minerals, beta carotene and gamma-linolenic acid. Spirulina also contains chlorophyll which has been shown to increase the oxygen carrying capabilities of the blood.
As a concentrated source of protein, the abundance of essential amino acids may help your growth and recovery after exercise. It is also recognised that the protein content is extremely bio-available compared to the poor uptake of protein from other food sources.
As a food supplement Spirulina can help improve energy, nutrient balance and weight control whilst providing powerful detoxifying properties. It has also been suggested that Spirulina can help treat allergies by increasing the body's anti-inflammatory response and reducing the release of histamine.
