Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a naturally occurring nutrient called a phospholipid and is an essential component of human cell membranes. It is found in particularly high concentrations in the membranes of cells with a high metabolic activity such as the brain, heart, liver and skeletal muscle.
Phosphatidylserine supplementation can also suppress cortisol production. Cortisol and other stress responses are known to be associated with immune suppression and tissue breakdown. This can result in protein been drawn out of the muscle and create a catabolic state. Therefore, using Phosphatidylserine could help maintain lean mass during periods of heavy stress and intense exercise.
Phosphatidylserine has been reported to have positive effects on mental function and mood. It has been prescribed to those suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other age associated cognitive decline. Several studies suggest that patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's respond better. Results also show patients experienced better moods and behaviour as a result of using Serine.
It has also been suggested that Phosphatidylserine could help improve aerobic endurance by delaying the onset of fatigue.
