If you have dandruff, you’ll be aware of the dry, inconvenient flakes that reside on your head and shoulders, paired with the constantly itchy scalp. Common in both men and women, regardless of hair type, it can affect anyone and it can also dramatically effect confidence. Continue reading to discover our extensive guide on everything you need to know to keep your scalp flake-free.
What Causes Dandruff?
Dandruff is caused by the overgrowth of a microscopic yeast and affects more than 50% us at some time and men are more susceptible to it than women. It’s quite normal to shed some dead skin flakes since skin is constantly renewing itself, but yeast overgrowth on the scalp can speed up this process and lead to the formation of unsightly flakes. Nobody’s entirely sure what sends the yeast into overdrive but stress, hormonal changes, humidity and changes in diet are thought to be triggers. The (somewhat) good news is that it tends to ease off in middle age, but until then you’ll need a good anti-dandruff strategy.
Other than the overgrowth of yeast, there are plenty of other causes. If you have a particularly oily scalp, it can cause skin cells to clump together causing flaking. Dry skin, using the wrong hair products for your hair and skin conditions such as eczema can also cause dandruff. One the first steps to take if you suffer with it is to swap out your shampoo and conditioner to see if it makes a difference.
How to Get Rid of Dandruff:
-
Don’t Scratch
Buy now with free deliveryThe more your fiddle with your scalp, the more you’ll irritate the skin and the bigger the flakes will be. You also run the risk of damaging the hair follicles. Use soothing, anti-dandruff treatments several times a week to calm the scalp and prevent itching. Phyto Phytosquam Intense shampoo should be left on the hair for 5-10 minutes before rinsing; this should shift the stubbornest flakes whilst leaving your hair looking great too.
-
Exfoliate

A cleansing, purifying scrub will be able to loosen all of the dead skin cells as well as help maintain a healthy scalp environment. We recommend this one from Christophe Robin.

Stay Healthy

You can also take vitamin E supplements for a health boost, as they promote blood circulation and proper healing. In turn, this can aid your scalp’s recovery.

It’s thought that sunlight inhibits the growth of the Pityrosporum Ovale yeast, which is what causes the dreaded flakes. Remember to use a hair SPF whilst out to prevent sunburn on the scalp, otherwise you can exacerbate the issue.
