Awesome once you get used to it
"I got this razor after getting sick of paying out silly money for M3 blades. At first I got a few cuts and the shave wasn't as good as the M3 but now after a month of persevering I get a really good shave even just going with the growth direction, it is quick a skin feels and looks a lot better since using it, I guess that's because the M3 passes three cuts per stroke and this only 1. I use Geo F Trumper shave soap and a brush and I highly recommend you do the same. Simply the best if used with the right cream
"I have used all the pricey razors, mach3 turbo, quatro etc but nothing matches a DE razor. Beware though that you MUST use a glycerin based cream. What works with normal razors (e.g. Clinique) does not work with DE razors. Trumper's rose did not work for me either because it dries the skin. Try the almond cream of Taylor of old Bond street. That said, give your face a chance and use after having a hot face wash to open the pores. Fantastic Razor...And here's why
"The Merkur is the best razor I have used, but then again I have only used this and a Mach 3 in my life. The Merkur blows any modern Gillette razor out of the water and given me the best shaves of my life. This razor took me about 4 weeks to get used to: it's style, it's weight and the best techniques on how to use it all took time to master. It is best to start at number 1 setting (mild) and work your way up to setting 6 (sharp) but I now have it on 4 or 5 all the time and don't use the recommended Merkur blades. I find the Gillette platinum blades work better and they can be bought online (see forums) or at most John Lewis stores. I won't deny there's been bad and frequent cuts on my face in the first few weeks. However, it was worth it for what I have now. I rarely cut my face at all with the Merkur. I have about 3 shaves a week and probably get about one minor nick or cut a month if I'm unlucky. Remember, if you're going to use the razor then use it correctly. Use a good shave oil with a popular shave cream/gel after you, of course, take a hot shower or use a shave towel. With the Merkur it is best to shave in short strokes, using both sides of the double-sided razor and then rinse well with medium to hot water. Try it for 4 weeks and get you'll get used to it. If I can use it properly then anyone can. This razor is heavy weight compared to a modern day Gillette. Try not to rub it against your face too hard and instead let the weight of the razor do the cutting. Good luck...Buy one of these today!" - Craig Leggat |

"Gents. It is a razor! It is no different from a Mach3, a Fusion, or a BIC disposable. If you have spots or a rash, you will cut the top off and bleed. If you have smooth skin as long as you do not slide the blade from side to side you should not see blood. So my review is simple, TAKE YOUR TIME (women take their time to get ready in a morning! so why do we try to do it all in a second just to kick our heels waiting for them?) make shaving a real job not a chore. Use the right shaving oil or foam for your skin, always try to shave in or just after a shower, warm up the skin to open the pores. Change the blade when it is blunt. After shaving use a moisturiser that suits your skin. It is not rocket science, but it is your face. "DO NOT listen to all the negative reviews about this razor!! They obviously have tried shaving as you would with the multi-blade razors and immediately put pressure on the blade and tried raking at the skin!! This needs respect and a certain finesse and after the first week of using it you will be amazed at the results. Start off on the lowest blade setting as you begin the learning curve and gradually increase when your confidence starts to build. I've had this razor for a couple of weeks and I'm on setting 4. I found settings 5 and 6 were too aggressive and took a few nick on my neck!! I suggest you watch a couple of short clips on double-edged shaving techniques on youtube.com before you make the switch....Feels 'weighty' and well made and when used with quality cream (i.e. Trumpers shaving cream/soap) and a badger hair brush you will get the closest shave ever without any irritation. Being only 22 I used to get aweful shaving rash and in-growing hairs round the neck but all I have now is baby smooth skin that smells fantastic, courtesy of the Trumpers Rose shaving cream and I am able to shave on a daily basis. "I have been a lifelong Gillette man, but no more. This razor shaves closer and neater than any Mach3 razor. Its a bit on the heavy side but probaby because I am used to the plastic mach3's. Tips to remember, do not press with this razor let its own weight do the work. The funny thing is I actually got through my shave FASTER than I do with my normal Mach3, it really shifts the stubble, I used Truffit and Hill shave creame and finished with American crew after shave. Another tip, do not be distracted by wife or girlfriend or whoever when you first use this tool, as you need to concentrate or you will cut yourself. If you use a low setting to begin with, keep a strong grip and don't apply pressure you'll be okay. Its pricey to begin with £35, but if you think that packs of 10 are £4 only and you get a pack of 10 free, which I suppose will last me 10-12 weeks, compare that to Mach 3, pack of 4 = £5, that last me 4-6 weeks, then I think over time it will pay itself off." - Abid Ghani |

"Yes, this does take a bit of getting used to and don't think about using it the way the prat in the Gillette ads sweeps his Mach 3 around his face - you will be more than a little sorry! It requires a very different approach to shaving which, once you have the hang of it, will give you a better shave and it's much more enjoyable too. I was a begrudging fan of the Gillette Fusion but was unhappy at the silly price of blades. As the previous comments say: don't skimp on shaving cream (Trumpers by far the best), get a decent best badger brush and check out the excellent, if a little obsessive videos by Mantic on Youtube. One word of warning 'though: take extra care when adjusting the razor if your hands are wet or the razor is wet - I nearly lost a finger! "I buy lots of things from Mankind, but this has got to be one of the best buys of them all from my last 3 years with them. Seriously everyone DO NOT LISTEN to the bad reviews. The secret is good preparation and not to rush the shave. I started shaving before I went to bed at first because I have tendancy to rush shaving in the mornings because of little time. The shave is closer and therefore lasts well into the evening next day. If you rush you are likely to cut yourself take your time and let the weight of the razor do the work. Watch the shaving techniques on YOU TUBE as well, these really help. To put things into perspective if the Turkish can use open blade razors on a daily basis in their barbers on thousands of customers and deliver the closest shave with out so much as the slightest nick or cut, this tells you everything, its down to you, getting the technique right, practice and be patience, the rewards are definitely worth it. I used to think I had sensitive skins and the fact that I have really thick stubble doesn't help. This meant that I could only wet shave every other day at best and use an electric in between. By applying the principles and advice on these videos my shaving experience has changed from a REAL CHORE to a PLEASURE. Shaving really is an Art and if anyone has given this product a bad review are simply not doing it right. I should know I was one of you. Very Impressed
"I never ever review anything, but this razor really is impressive. I have Rosacea and have found my skin much improved since using this razor (before I used a mach3). Not sure why exactly but one reason may be that there's only 1 blade not 3, and I think the fact that no pressure needs to be applied is a factor. For me the blades last about a week of shaving daily which isn't bad considering the cost. I used to be the first to grab the latest Gillette gadget but have gone old school now and use Trumpers Coconut Shaving soap and a Badger hair brush. I do really enjoy shaving now. "Takes some time to get used to and the first few times (to steal a line from a certain horror movie) there will be blood ! but once you get the technique right this razor will give you an unsurpassed shave. I do find it now takes longer to shave as more care needs to be taken especially in the awkward areas, and normally takes several passes with the razor, I only shave twice a week so don't find this a real problem, and find the final result well worth the extra 'ritual' required. also excellent service from Mankind. "I shave my head with this. with other razors I used to get in-growing hairs at the base of my neck, with this I haven't had a single one, by far the best shave I've ever had and the sound as you shave is amazing. Prep is important though as people have pointed out, so get a good brush and some good shaving cream and read up on how to do a correct wet shave. I've had no trouble with this razor (apart from cutting the top of my thumb off when picking it up, which I guess has made me shave very carefully ever since) treat it with respect and you won't cut your face to bits. take your time, don't scrape (the weight of the razor is enough pressure) and you'll be fine. Different technique than Mach III but worth while after learning curve
"At first after switchin from a Mach III to this razor I did cut myself. I realize that there was a learning curve. Then I had an Epiphany: I started shaving the moustache with the grain, the chin horizontally from side to side, and the cheeks toward the grain. On the second pass, All of the above against the grain Prior to shaving I use: "Shaving Secret " Oil, very inexpensive at Wal Mart store lasts six months at least, then apply the shaving cream lather. The shave is much closer than the Mach III that way and I am not cutting myself (Except when I start to hurry). Daunting
"Daunting at first, but like every other razor... cuts become less frequent after a few uses. I'm now using this razor to shave my head, instead of the costly (and not very long-living) Mach3 Turbo blades. Just prep the beard/stubble and keep the skin wet whilst shaving. Good but the secret's in the preparation.
"Once you get used to handling the Futur, shaving does become pleasure. You need to ensure that you have ample time to cut those whiskers, rush it and you'll slice n dice that face. Take your time, 15 mins I reckon, (use a shaving oil, shaving brush and good shaving soap) and you are rewarded with a baby-bot kissable smooth face. As with any other type of wet razor, shave first in the growth direction than against. Using the Futur doesn't require you to apply any pressure as you cut, its weight is sufficient. The greatest thing about it is the sound it makes as you cut through the beard. You'll know by the sound it makes that you've had a damned good shave. Using a dual-edge safety razor for the first time, my only initial criticism was that the shave doesn't last as long as with the likes of a Mach3 or Quattro. But, and it is a huge one, you are rewarded with a huge improvement to your complexion. Skin feels and looks better without the need for other products. Persevere for shaving pleasure
"For little reason other than paternally inspired nostalgia, I decided to go 'retro' and ditch my electric shaver. The Merkur 'Futur' was recommended by a friend and in terms of build quality and anthropometric appeal - it's second to none. Is it easy to adapt to, probably not if you're an electric-convert like me. Expect two weeks of bad starts to the day and a couple of blood transfusions. Invest in a block of Geo F Trumper shaving alum to calm things down and be patient. I am sure that I'd have awarded a full 5-stars if I was writing this a couple of weeks down the line. A Mixed Bag!
"Before buying this razor I was using the Fusion power razor but was always getting razor burn on my neck so I did a bit of investigating for alternatives and decided that this was the way to go (not sure enough to shell out for the vision.) Since getting my razor I have discovered that it will not suit everyone. It gives a really good shave, ONCE YOU FIGURE OUT HOW TO SHAVE PROPERLY. I find that it really does minimize razor burn and ingrown hairs however does not shave quite as closely as a fusion (this is a good thing as often with cartridge based razors you are actually cutting the hair below skin level which can lead to many problems. In short it gives a really good shave however some may be disappointed. PS. "This razor is beautifully made and looks lovely. The blades are relatively cheap so it will pay for itself. But it's taken a long time to adjust to the razor and I'm still not there yet. I haven't cut my face with it but I have nicked fingers, nostrils and ears when a bit sleepy. Previously I used a Mach3 with shaving oil but oil doesn't work for me with the Merkur and I've trawled through quite a few creams and gels. Finally settled on Aqueous Cream from Boots which we used on our daughters backside when she was a baby. It's dirt cheap, works well (for me) and can be used for lots of my other bathroomy needs. "The tide is turning against this razor I think. I spent 1 month with it, it gives a close shave but it ripped the face off of me one morning. Always had to be careful to avoid cuts, and skin often felt 'abraded' afterwards. Went back to the powered Mach 3, it's like night and day. The powered Mach 3 is a faster shave, gets the bit under the nose which the Merkur can't do and is the best Gillette yet for avoiding cuts. Streets ahead of the Merkur. Not for me
"I purchased this razor, and while it does give an excellent shave, I started to get ingrown hairs within a few days of using it. I gave it a couple of weeks and when the ingrown hair problem persisted stopped using this razor and went back to my Fusion. Within a couple of days of returning to the Fusion, the ingrown hairs stopped and have not been a problem since. While there can be several causes of ingrown hairs, the only change I made to my products and routine at the time was to switch to this razor. Thus, I feel it was the razor causing me the problems. For mature shavers..
"I like the concept of shaving the traditional way. Combined with a good shave prep, shaving becomes quite an enjoyable activity. There is a steep learning curve but if you've got the time, go for it and leave the fusion at the back of the bathroom cabinet. I used my merkur for 3 months and have some very good shaves. However you have to shave very carefully, and adjust your strokes and angle of the blade for the contours of your face. Something that a sensor excel does for you. Furthermore, my skin looks more refreshed after a shave with a multi-blade probably because it shaves closer etc. Honestly, buy this because you have time to learn how to use it and if you have tough mature skin that can take the sharp blade. What is the fuss about
"I have pretty fast growing and thick stubble and have been shaving pretty much every day for 15 years. For many many years I had been moaning about how bad a shave I was getting from the high street razors. I thought this might be the answer from all the good review, but have now realised thats just the way they are sorted. Come on Mankind, give a more unbiased view of products. Anyway, to the razor, I used it many times over a 2 week period, but continually found I had to go back to my mach 3 to finish off the job, even with it on the closest setting. I didnt cut myself too often apart from one time when it just tore my throat to shreds. As with other people, I found it only managed a few shaves per blade. I also found the head too big to do the lip comfortably, and heavy and unwieldy when slippery with foam. I am now back with the mac 3 and king of shaves serum, and can shave in a fraction of the time of with foam, with greater control and closeness, and less mess. Also the blades last a week, despite being used every day in both directions. I now appreciate what a good shave they give, that is about the only positive I have from buying this razor." - Simon Clark |
