And this newie from New York-based apothecary Kiehl’s is a real breath of fresh (forest) air. A sensual, spicy and earthy combination of woody and grassy notes with a floral one to give it a twist it has a sweet, warm aroma with a faint hint of figs. Think dense tropical forest and you’re partly there. What’s more, it comes in a fantastically simple but uber-stylish bottle (and let’s face these thing do matter). For me, this is this Christmas’ must-have fragrance.

2. Aramis Classic Reserve eau de toilette 100ml

There are few fragrances that can be described as being true classics but those that can possess an originality and appeal that transcends age and changing fashions. Aramis Classic is one such fragrance. Launched in 1964 it’s still going strong and is one my all-time top five fragrances. This ‘reserve’ edition is a premium version of the classic fragrance - reworked, remixed and reinterpreted for the Noughties. It’s more intense and ‘hotter’ than the original, thanks to the addition of juniper berry and cinnamon and certainly has more depth and sensuality. In my book, there are few fragrances as masculine and as suited to evening wear than this so if you’re not already an Aramis devotee make sure you give it a whirl.

3. Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Cologne 50ml

Sandalwood Cologne is Trumper's most popular fragrance and it’s easy to see why. Not only is it superbly masculine and eminently wearable, it’s also fabulously traditional without being old fashioned. As well as the warm and sensual sandalwood base (a note always popular with women) it also has fresh citrus notes and a floral heart comprising of white Jasmine, Carnation, Geranium and Rose, ingredients rarely found together in men’s fragrances these days. Partly because of the staying power of sandalwood it’s also fantastically long-lasting – a feature unusual for a cologne. The perfect winter scent.
