How to Overcome Lack of Motivation

It’s perfectly acceptable to have an ‘off’ day every so often; however, it can become a problem if these days become more regular.  If you find yourself feeling unmotivated and low in energy, don’t worry as there are plenty of ways to combat it and get yourself back on the road to success. Here at Mankind, we’ve provided our top tips on how to overcome a lack of motivation.

What Causes Lack of Motivation and Energy?

There are several causes for lack of motivation and energy. Some of the most common causes include;

  • Procrastination
  • Lack of sleep
  • Past failures
  • Underlying mental health issues
  • Stress and nerves
  • Long-standing habits
  • Poor diet
  • Poor working conditions

By identifying exactly which things are causing your lack of motivation and energy, it will make it easier to combat it. Once you’ve identified exactly where the problems lie, you can work on some of our tips below to overcome them.

How to Overcome Lack of Motivation

Invest In Your Work Space

Working in a dull, dark or uncomfortable place is sure to reduce your motivation levels. Replace uncomfortable chairs and outdated equipment, change the light bulb and add some colour with something as simple as a quirky mug or a poster. Making it comfortable and adding a little personality can really boost your motivation.

Write a Plan

When you have your plans written down, you’re more likely to work towards them. Make a list and write down some shorter term goals to achieve. Check up on the list a few times per month to ensure that you’re on track. This makes it less likely for you to get behind and then give up all together.

Don’t Burn Out

You know the feeling when you start off being incredibly motivated for something and work on it for a while, only to find yourself exhausted? Instead of using all of your energy at once, break up tasks into small chunks to keep the excitement present.

Don’t Compare Yourself

Comparing yourself to other people will do nothing except make you lose focus on the long term goals. Everyone works at a different pace and just because someone else may be further ahead, it doesn’t mean that you can’t do well too. Focus on nothing except your own individual progress and your motivation should remain intact.

Surround Yourself with Positivity

Tell your most supportive friends and family members your goals and plans, no matter how small. This way, if you find yourself getting behind, they will be able to remind you what you told them and motivate you to carry on.
